City Park West Neighborhood Watch — August 2026 Monthly Recap

Summary

  • National Night Out was held Tuesday, August 4th at City Park Pavilion, and DPD District 2 ran a Backpack & School Supply Giveaway on August 8th at Skyland Park — both promoted through the watch channel.
  • DPD District 2 circulated the same set of crime bulletins twice this month (Aug 4 and Aug 20): a homicide/shooting at N Verbena St/Verbena Park, a homicide at E 12th Ave & N Syracuse St, a robbery on the 6400 block of E Colfax Ave, a robbery at E 35th Ave & N Downing St, and an arrest in a N Columbine St homicide. None had a confirmed City Park West nexus, but the repetition suggests District 2 wants these amplified.
  • East Colfax BRT construction continued: overnight mill-and-overlay work near Colorado Blvd (Aug 16–20), plus announcements of business-support events and a September 10 "Denver Chats on Colfax" briefing.

Safety Incidents

DPD Crime Bulletins (recurring, Aug 4 & Aug 20)

The same cluster of bulletins was included in two separate District 2 community emails this month: homicide/shooting at N Verbena St/Verbena Park; homicide at E 12th Ave & N Syracuse St (arrest made in a related N Columbine St homicide); robbery on the 6400 block of E Colfax Ave; robbery at E 35th Ave & N Downing St. All are District 2-wide, with no confirmed City Park West-specific incidents this month.

National Night Out — City Park Pavilion (Aug 4)

DPD District 2 hosted National Night Out, 6–8pm at City Park Pavilion (2001 Steele St), with K-9s, a SWAT BearCat, mounted patrol, and a fire safety simulator. Same email included the recurring Neighborhood Watch safety reminders (vehicle valuables, bike registration/locks, unsecured firearms per new Colorado law, porch piracy).

Backpack & School Supply Giveaway — Skyland Park (Aug 8)

District 2 held a giveaway, 10am–noon at Skyland Park (3380 N Holly St). No incident reports tied to the event.

High St Bike Theft & Same-Day Partial Recovery (Aug 8)

A resident's bike was stolen despite an industrial chain lock securing the front wheel to the frame — it hadn't been anchored to a fixed object, so the thief took the whole bike. It was logged with Denver Bicycle Garage/Project529 and located later the same day nearby, missing only a rear wheel, apparently abandoned after the thief couldn't get far. Residents were reminded to register bikes through Project529.

Suspicious Vehicle, Suspected Dealing & Vehicle Impound (Aug 8)

Residents reported an individual near a High St address associated with suspected drug activity, seen with bolt cutters, along with a blue SUV displaying fake temporary plates; multiple neighbors called it in and DPD responded, logging the vehicle for referral to an undercover unit. Later the same day, a separate wellness check in the area led officers to the same vehicle, where an occupant was found with narcotics and in medical distress; she was hospitalized and the vehicle was impounded, with residents noting signs consistent with a stolen vehicle.

Property Hardening — La Paz Townhomes (Aug 8)

In response to repeated break-in attempts, the La Paz townhomes added anti-theft hardware (anti-climb spikes and steel plates shielding door locks from being pried open from outside).

East Colfax BRT Construction & Programming (Aug 7, 16–20, 19)

  • Overnight mill-and-overlay work, E Colfax Ave (Garfield St–Ash St, centered on Colorado Blvd), Aug 16–20, 7pm–5am, with lane/intersection closures and RTD 15/15L detour stops maintained.
  • August newsletter (Aug 19): bus-only lane operator training continues ahead of fall launch; Fax Pass Pop-up at Colfax & Albion (Aug 31); Colfax Canvas Mural Festival (live painting from Aug 29, celebration Sept 4); "Denver Chats on Colfax" business briefing on bus-only lane operations set for Sept 10; historic designation window for East Colfax property owners closes Sept 1, 2026.

Overnight Alley Incident Near 16th & Race — Possible Attempted Vehicular Assault (Aug 16)

Residents reported an incident in the alley near 16th and Race between roughly midnight and 1am, describing it as someone attempting to run another person over. DPD requested any available camera or audio footage from the area. A dark-colored SUV was towed from near 16th & High shortly after, though a resident later noted the towed vehicle's plate suggested it may not have been the vehicle actually involved.

Encampment Report Behind a Residential Garage (Aug 18)

A resident reported a group of roughly five people setting up an encampment behind a residential garage; no drugs were observed. Multiple neighbors called it in to non-emergency dispatch the same day.

DPD Officer of the Month Vote (Aug 20–29)

Three nominations circulated for community vote: an apartment burglary arrest near N Fillmore St (Officers Hueckstaedt & Arnold); a foot pursuit where a suspect tried to grab an officer's firearm near N Josephine St (Officer Peyton); and a domestic-violence rescue of a woman and 7-year-old on N High St (Officers Stuper, Consonero, Martinez).

September 2nd Community Meeting Announced (Aug 20)

DPD District 2 announced its next Community Advisory Board meeting, Sept 2, District 2 Station (3921 Holly St), doors 5pm/meeting 6pm, with guest speaker Denver DA John W. Remaining 2026 CAB dates tentatively Oct 7, Nov 4, Dec 2.

Organized Bike Theft Activity (Aug 23)

Two theft incidents surfaced in the same week: an e-bike was stolen from a resident's backyard overnight, and separately, camera footage showed what residents described as a bike-theft group temporarily stashing a stolen bike in another yard — after also taking a front gate lock — before returning hours later to retrieve it, suggesting coordinated rather than opportunistic activity. Residents also reported that DPD's online non-emergency portal is no longer accepting trespassing reports, though District 2 confirmed it will still take them by phone. Residents were again pointed to Project529 and Bike Index for bike registration.

Neighborhood Watch Group Expansion (Aug 18, 21, 24)

City Park West RNO board reminders and coordination continued via the "Coffee Klatch Follow Up" thread: a board meeting reminder (Aug 18, Denver Book Society); Paula's update that she's traveling through October and will process additions on return (Aug 21); and new board member Zac H. supplying four contacts — Zachary H., Tara M., Charles "Mack" V., and Jane J. — for the WhatsApp group and newsletter (Aug 24). Scott H. also flagged that Holly & Jo still haven't been added to WhatsApp.

Resident Observations and Themes

Resident-facing communications this month came from daily Gmail/Nextdoor digests and the "High and Race St Safety" WhatsApp export, which showed meaningfully more activity than DPD's own emails captured this month:

  • Property crime showed signs of organization, not just opportunism. A High St bike theft was partially recovered the same day (Aug 8); an e-bike theft and a separate incident — camera footage of a group temporarily stashing a stolen bike in another yard after taking a front gate lock — surfaced in the same week (Aug 23), consistent with prior months' "bicycle chop shop" concerns.
  • A suspected drug/dealing stop escalated quickly. An individual with bolt cutters near a suspicious vehicle with fake temp plates was reported and logged for referral to an undercover unit; hours later a separate wellness check on the same vehicle found an occupant hospitalized for narcotics-related medical distress, and the vehicle was impounded (Aug 8).
  • A possible attempted vehicular assault raised public-safety concern. Residents described an overnight incident in the alley near 16th & Race as someone attempting to run another person over; DPD requested camera/audio footage (Aug 16).
  • Residents are hardening their own properties. La Paz townhomes added anti-climb spikes and pry-resistant door hardware after repeated break-in attempts (Aug 8).
  • A reporting-channel gap needs DPD confirmation. Residents report DPD's online non-emergency portal no longer accepts trespassing reports, pushing volume to phone lines — worth verifying directly with DPD.
  • DPD repeated the same bulletins across two emails this month (Aug 4 and Aug 20 both listed the Verbena Park, Syracuse St, and E Colfax items) — may indicate a pattern District 2 wants residents to stay aware of, rather than new activity.
  • The Neighborhood Watch group is actively expanding through the RNO board network, but hit an administrative bottleneck. Via the "Coffee Klatch Follow Up" Gmail thread, Scott H. connected new board member Zac H. with Paula; Zac supplied four new contacts (Zachary H., Tara M., Charles "Mack" V., and Jane J.) on Aug 24, but two neighbors (Holly & Jo) are still not added to WhatsApp, and Paula is traveling through October — she plans to request WhatsApp admin access to add people directly and run another flyering round on her return.
  • The distribution boundary question (Vine St/Gilpin) is unresolved for a second month and should be settled before it recurs again.
  • East Colfax BRT corridor activity continued on two tracks — ongoing construction impacts (overnight work near Colorado Blvd, Aug 16–20) alongside business-support programming (Fax Pass Pop-up, Mural Festival, and the Sept 10 briefing).
  • Also noted: an encampment report of roughly five people behind a residential garage (Aug 18), with no drugs observed.

Specific Asks of DPD

  1. Carried forward from June/July, still no update received:
    • Case 26-0800079 (TGP stabbing, May 14) — status/charges update.
    • Improved 911/311 response in the CPW/Race/High corridor.
    • Dedicated patrol of the Race St./High St. alley.
    • TGP alcove enforcement follow-up.
    • Clarity on enforcement activity at the 1900 block of E. 16th Ave.
    • Video evidence submission process for resident-collected footage.
    • No-trespassing agreement distribution to relevant TGP-area locations.
    • Whether TGP-adjacent property impacts (e.g., the 1532 High St spigot situation raised in July) are part of a broader pattern DPD is tracking.
  2. New from resident reports (WhatsApp), August:
    • Status/outcome on the Aug 16 overnight alley incident near 16th & Race (possible attempted vehicular assault) — was camera footage obtained, and is there a suspect or vehicle identified?
    • Status/outcome on the Aug 8 vehicle stop tied to suspected dealing (blue SUV, fake temp plates) — was the vehicle confirmed stolen, and what came of the impound and undercover referral?
    • Confirmation of whether DPD's non-emergency online portal still accepts trespassing reports — residents report it no longer does, pushing volume to phone lines.
    • Any DPD visibility into organized/repeat bike-theft activity in the Race/High alley corridor (two incidents in one week, Aug 23).

Watch Group Next Steps

  • Resolve WhatsApp admin access so Holly, Jo, and the four contacts supplied by Zac H. (Zachary H., Tara M., Charles "Mack" V., Jane J.) can be added to the group and newsletter list.
  • Confirm the newsletter/watch boundary decision (Vine St/Gilpin) with Scott H.
  • Plan the next flyering round for October, when Paula returns to town.
  • Promote the September 2 Community Meeting with Commander Aragon and DA John W. to residents.
  • Re-share the Project529/Bike Index registration reminder given the second bike-theft cluster this month.
  • Follow up with DPD on the trespassing-report-portal question so accurate guidance can go out to residents.
